Repeat payment card transactions

Repeat payment card transactions

Overview

Repeat payments (RP) allow you (the merchant) to schedule future payments to be taken from a customer's Credit or Debit card.

Repeat payments can either be on a fixed or variable schedule.

Merchants can view and manage any schedules using the Manage repeat payments tab.

This guide explains both the current as well as the legacy repeat payment system.

On the 29th of December 2025, we moved our entire customer base over to our new repeat payments system. Any new schedule you set, moving forward will be using the new system. You will still be able to report on schedules created on the legacy system by navigating to the legacy tab (only available for merchants with legacy schedules).

Creating a repeat payment

You can set up repeat payments on the Take a payment page by sending payment links and within Reporting on the Recent transactions and Blink card transactions pages. This guide looks specifically at card repeat payments.

Repeat payments can either be on a:

  • Fixed schedule; a fixed amount is taken at a set frequency for a certain number of cycles.

  • Variable schedule; various amounts are scheduled for specific dates that have been manually selected.

Repeat payments via Take a payment

Select “Take a payment” on the dashboard, or from the top left navigation bar

This gives you the ability to set up a payment schedule for a recurring amount on a set frequency.
The number of cycles can be customised.

  • First, select the MID, transaction type of “Sale”, payment type of “Fixed schedule”, and payment method of “Card payment”.

  • Next, enter the customer's full name, email, and reference to be noted on the email receipt and transaction history.

  • Now choose the start date.

    • If today is chosen, it will process that initial payment immediately

  • You have the option to choose a different amount for the initial payment.

    • This first payment is included in the number of payment cycles you choose later

  • Select the frequency of payment and enter the amount per payment, starting from £1.

  • The currency may also be selected here, if settings permit.

  • Finally, choose the total number of payments to be taken in this Repeat payment schedule.

    • If a limited number of instalments is selected, you can customise a different date and amount for the final payment. (It will be included in the number of cycles)
This will replace the date and amount of the final scheduled payment, so the new date must be after this last scheduled payment date.

  • Fill in the card and address details and click Charge

  • Both the merchant and the customer will receive a confirmation email describing the repeat payment schedule that has been created, and if the initial payment was today, a transaction receipt too.

    • If the initial payment date is a future date, only the confirmation email will be sent

This gives you the ability to set up a payment schedule that contains multiple different payment amounts on any chosen dates

  • First, select the MID, transaction type of “Sale”, payment type of “Variable schedule”, and payment method of “Card payment”.

  • Next, enter the customer's full name, email, and transaction reference (if applicable) to be noted on the email receipt and transaction history.

  • The currency may also be selected here, if settings permit.

  • Select the date and enter the amount for the first payment.

  • Select the plus icon to add additional payment(s) and repeat the steps.

    • Please note: The date for each instalment must be after the previous instalment date

  • Fill in the card and address details and click Charge

  • Both the merchant and the customer will receive a confirmation email describing the repeat payment schedule that has been created, and if the initial payment was today, a transaction receipt too.

    • (If the initial payment date is a future date, only the confirmation email will be sent)

    • The currency is also picked up from the original transaction, and cannot be changed here

  • Next, select the schedule type from the dropdown.

Fixed schedule

  • Select the frequency of payment and enter the amount per payment, starting from £1.

Request a payment page

Navigate to “Request a payment” page.
(Select “Request a payment” on the dashboard, or from the top left navigation bar)

  • Select the desired MID and transaction type of “Repeat payment”

  • Next, enter the customer's full name, an email/mobile number that the payment link will be sent to, and a reference that will be noted on the email receipt and transaction history.

  • Now choose a schedule type, Fixed or Variable, and enter the schedule details (amount, frequency, number of instalments)

Repeat payment schedules created on a payment link always have expiry dates set.

By default, the payment link will expire at midnight on the first payment date (the start date), but it can be changed to an earlier date.

  • Finally, generate or send the payment link

  • The payment link will be displayed on Requested payments page with the schedule details.

  • When the customer enters their card details and processes this payment link, a repeat payment schedule will be created and displayed on Manage repeat payments page.

Fixed schedule

This gives you the ability to set up a payment schedule for a recurring amount on a set frequency.
The number of cycles can be customised.

  • First choose the start date.

Start dates:
When a repeat payment schedule is created for a payment link, the expiry date is set to the first payment date by default, although it can be changed to an earlier date if desired.

The customer will be able to access the payment link and enter their card details until midnight on the selected expiry date, after which the payment link will expire.

This will replace the date and amount of the final scheduled payment, so the new date must be after the second last scheduled payment date.

  • Confirm when the payment link will expire, and add a reminder if desired

  • Finally, generate or send the payment link

Variable schedule

This gives you the ability to set up a payment schedule that contains multiple different payment amounts on any chosen dates

  • The currency may be selected here, if settings permit.

  • Select the date and enter the amount for the first payment.

Start dates:
When a repeat payment schedule is created for a payment link, the expiry date is set to the first payment date by default, although it can be changed to an earlier date if desired.

The customer will be able to access the payment link and enter their card details until midnight on the selected expiry date, after which the payment link will expire.

  • Select the plus icon to add additional payment(s) and repeat the steps.

    • Please note: The date for each instalment must be after the previous instalment date

  • Confirm when the payment link will expire, and add a reminder if desired

  • Finally, generate or send the payment link

First payment and Receipts

Depending when the customer enters their card details, Blink will either just create the schedule or also process the first payment

  • If the customer enters their card details and creates the schedule on the start date

    • The first payment will be processed immediately, and both the merchant and the customer will receive a confirmation email describing the repeat payment schedule that has been created, and a transaction receipt too for the first payment.

  • If the customer enters their card details and creates the schedule before the start date

    • The schedule will be created (it will have a “pending” status as no payments have been processed yet), and both the merchant and the customer will receive a confirmation email describing the repeat payment schedule that has been created.
No transaction receipts will be sent until the first payment is processed on the start date.

Receipt

You and the customer will receive a transaction receipt and an email describing the Repeat Payment that has been created.

Notes

When you set up a merchant account with us, you are asked which currencies to use to process transactions. You can request additional currencies to be added.

If you have multiple currencies on your account, you can select the currency you wish to process the transaction using the drop-down list by clicking on the currency symbol.

Report on your repeat payments

On the Recent Blink transactions page, you can see any transaction you have taken on Blink that day (via Request a payment, Take a payment or Blink page).

On the Blink card transactions page, you can view the entire history of all the transactions you have taken on Blink or via an integration.

Navigation

These pages are under the Reporting tab on the left-hand navigation bar (Reporting→ Recent Blink transactions and Blink Card Transactions pages).

Navigate to either page and locate the transaction from the customer you want to use to set up the repeat payment. The repeat button exists for successful transactions.

Manage your repeat payments

If you have already used the Repeat payment feature on the Blink platform, there will be 2 tabs displayed on the “Manage repeat payments” page.

The page will initially open the tab named “New”, which will contain any new schedules that are created.

There will also be a tab named “Legacy”. This will display the data of your existing repeat payment schedules. Find below more info on these transactions.

Viewing schedules

The main table on the “Manage repeat payments” page lists all your created repeat payment schedules.

image-20240905-141828.png

It also displays data such as the date and time of its creation, the customer's name, email, card, reference, frequency, next payment date and total amounts of the processed payments.

The total amounts calculates the number of processed payments, and the transaction value of successful payments.

Possible schedule statuses are as follows:

  • Pending – This schedule has not yet started

  • Active – This schedule has processed the first payment, and is currently running

  • Completed – This schedule has finished processing all its payments. No further payments will be processed

  • Cancelled – This schedule has been cancelled. No further payments will be processed

Filters

There is a filter for the creation date, and dropdown selections for the “Source”, “Blink page” and “Status”.

You can search the following fields for specific values:

  • Customer name

  • Customer email

  • Reference

  • Recurring amount (for Fixed schedules)

Next to the schedule “Status” in the top right are 2 action buttons for the schedule.

  • Cancel – This will stop the schedule and cancel any payments that have not yet been processed.
This does not affect payments that have already been processed.

  • Edit – This allows you to update/edit the schedule data, such as the customer name, email and schedule reference.
You can also update the stored card that is used for the payments

Please note: All changes made here will update future payments. Any payments that have already been processed will not be updated.

If these buttons are used, a new “schedule history” button will appear, which stores the original information.
When selected, it will display a modal detailing any changes made and the user who actioned them.

image-20240812-103044.png

Viewing transactions

When “View details” is selected for a specific repeat payment schedule, a list of the payments is displayed.

If there are more than 10 payments scheduled, it will display them on pages of 10.

Please note: If a fixed schedule is created with unlimited instalments, only 15 payments will be created and displayed initially. Each time a payment is processed, a new “pending” payment will be added to the schedule.

This list will show both processed and future pending payments.

  • Pending payments - These will be listed here with their scheduled dates, along with an “Edit” and “Remove” button.

  • Successful processed payments - These will have a “Cancel” or “Refund” button.
(“Cancel” and “Refund” will both action a refund. They are just named differently due to the stage at which the payment is refunded)

  • Declined processed payments - These will have a “Retry” button.

  • Removed/Cancelled payments - These payments cannot have any further actions performed on them

  • Pending payments that did not run on their scheduled day – These will have a “Run now” button

  • Cancelled – The entire schedule was cancelled

  • Removed – This specific payment was removed

Additional information on transactions

To view more detailed information on the processed payments themselves, select the “View in transaction history” button.

This will redirect to the Blink card transactions page, where the page will be filtered to display all the payments that have been attempted from this schedule, including declined payments and retries.

Each payment can then be viewed in detail by expanding the line, and if desired, a CSV can be downloaded from that page.

There is also an option to download this data. The “Download CSV” button will export a file containing a list of the payments within this schedule.

This contains an overview of all the payments in this schedule and contains both the processed payments and the scheduled pending payments, with some minor differences in what data they may show for each.
